Boise State, Feb. 10
The Hawkeyes wrapped up another perfect weekend road trip by winning eight matches on their way to a 30-9 victory over Boise State.
Iowa picked up bonus points in wins by Charlie Falck, Dan LeClere and Brent Metcalf to snap Boise State’s nine-meet winning streak, but Iowa coach Tom Brands wasn’t satisfied with the lopsided victory.
“The mistakes we are making in finishing positions and the lack of aggressiveness in terms of putting a guy away is huge,” Brands said. “Our guys need to be ready to go and be strong out there. I don’t think we’ve wrestled our best yet as a team, so we’ve got work to do. Even though we weren’t hitting on all cylinders today and looked sloppy at times, we won some close matches.”
Falck opened the dual with a 20-5 technical fall win over Alan Bartelli at 125. LeClere posted a 12-4 major decision against Eli Hutchison at 141.
Metcalf collected his ninth fall of the season, pinning Cody Bender with 59 seconds remaining in the first period at 149.
Iowa gave Joey Slaton a break at 133 and inserted Daniel Dennis into the line-up for the first time.
Dennis sustained a broken jaw in November during the week leading up to the team’s wrestle-offs. The sophomore picked up a 6-3 win against Cory Fish.
Sophomore Ryan Morningstar scored a takedown late in the second overtime to beat No. 12 Tyler Sherfey, 3-1, at 157.
The Hawkeyes also picked up victories from Phil Keddy at 184 and Matt Fields at heavyweight.
