Dave Morice
You will enjoy much laughter in life
Dave Morice
- Age: 62
- Lives in: Iowa City
- Occupation: Writer, illustrator, co-owner of Bill's Bookmart located inside Uptown Bill's Small Mall
- Favorite thing: Wooden nickel art project. In the mid-1980s Morice sent wooden nickels to famous people asking them to write or draw on one side and to sign and date on the other. He got 400 back. Ringo Starr drew a self-portrait. Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) drew a picture of the “Cat in the Hat.”
Dave Morice loves a funny story. So do his four siblings.
At family gatherings they try to one-up each other with a funny story. To Morice, the funniest stories are those with an element of surprise.
“I come from a laughing family,” Morice said. “We get together to tell not jokes, but funny stories.”
To Morice, there is no better pastime than laughing with family.
“It seems to me laugh and love are very similar,” Morice said. “You feel good with laughing and you feel good with loving. In our family laughing is loving.”
Morice often incorporates humor into his writing. For his latest book, “The Great American Fortune Cookie Novel,” he combined more than 5,000 random fortune cookie fortunes.
“There’s plenty of places to laugh,” Morice said of the book. “I kept thinking the person who wrote this fortune didn’t mean it to be read this way.”
Not wanting to waste the paper fortunes he designed a hat out of them, which he wears from time to time.
