One of the enjoyable moments in life for Patrick Diamitani is making other people laugh, especially while performing in a play for the West High group SPIT, or Students Producing Innovative Theatre.
“I get to smile or chuckle,” said Patrick, 17, a West High senior. “I don’t think I laugh more any other part of the day.”
For this year’s production, a student-written play called “Breaking News,” he played a hit man sent into a group of dysfunctional television news anchors. The plot revolved around the producers of the newscast trying to boost ratings with stunts including an anchor being kidnapped, a reporter being mauled by a tiger and hiring a hit man.
“He tries a lot of things to get people to listen to them,” Patrick said. “It’s one of the funniest scripts I’ve seen in a while.”
His character is a hit man who is a “mostly dysfunctional character,” Patrick says, who wears a suit with an obnoxious blazer and the pants worn too high.
“I try to look as goofy as I can, but I think I’m serious,” he said. “He doesn’t understand a lot of things.”
