Elizabeth Winbigler

1908-1995. City High girls’ counselor (1962-73), and English teacher (1940-62), was a popular City High faculty member more than three decades with wide impacts on Iowa City youth. Born on a farm near Alexis, Ill., and educated at Monmouth College in that city, she first taught rural school 15 miles from her home in “a direction I had never been.” She came to Iowa City for graduate work, found City High, and stayed a lifetime. Active at First Presbyterian Church, she never married. Her 1920s “bathing costume” is now displayed in Johnson County Historical Society museum in Coralville.
