Gerry (Gerard) Weeg
1927-1977. Pioneer who helped define computer science in America, left “an extraordinary legacy at UI” as first director (1964) of the UI computing center and father of UI’s academic computer science department. A Davenport native educated at St. Ambrose (B.A.), Oklahoma (M.A.) and Iowa State (1955 Ph.D. in math), he came to Iowa City after a stint at Remington Rand Univac Corp. in St. Paul and seven years teaching computer science at Michigan State. A well-received author, he was considered a superb teacher with a flair for humor. The university’s central computing center now carries his name.
