Himie Voxman

Age: 97. UI professor and School of Music director (1954-80), recognized as among America’s most influential music educators, taught clarinet to high school students to pay college expenses in Iowa City. A Centerville son of immigrant Russian parents, he earned a chemical engineering degree at UI in 1934, a master’s the following year, and joined the music faculty in 1939. Author of numerous compilations, reviews and books, and an international competitions judge, he has trained more leaders of American music schools than anyone else. The UI School of Music building was named for him during 1995.
