Otto Vogel

1899-1969. Iowa baseball coach (1925-66) and assistant football coach, left an indelible mark while baseball was “America’s pastime.” The Mendota native earned All-American at Illinois three times, winning the Big Ten 1923 scholastic medal. Injury forced retirement from the Chicago Cubs after two years (1923-24) for coaching at Iowa, where athletic director Paul Brechler called him the “greatest baseball coach in the county,” raising his salary from $7,500 to $8,000. A shrewd tactician and prolific writer, a chapter in one of his books is titled, “The Fine Art of the Squawk.” His teams won five Big Ten titles.
