Villhauer Brothers

All six from Iowa City served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, but unlike the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo who all perished when their light cruiser Juneau was sunk by a submarine torpedo in the South Pacific, the Villhauer brothers all returned safely home to Iowa City. Carl, Louie Jr., David, Howard, Herman and Leo were sons of Minnie and Louie, whose family home site at 515 E. Jefferson St. now serves as an apartment building. The Villhauer family has a remarkable century-long record of Iowa City Fire Department service, including brother Herman and the brothers’ father, Louie.
