Duane Spriestersbach
Age: 88. Graduate College dean, vice president for educational development and research (1966-89), interim UI president (1981-82) , professor of speech pathology and audiology (1958-89), twice postponed retirement to fill gaps in central administration. A leading advocate that faculty and staff seek outside research grants, he organized administrative support that gained $1.25 billion during his watch. His own 36-year cleft palate study generated $13 million in grants. After undergraduate work in Minnesota, he came for graduate work at UI, earning his master’s (1940) and a doctorate in 1948. He earned a Bronze Star in 1945 during Army service.
