Bertha Horack Shambaugh

1874-1953. Author, photographer, legendary hostess, authored two Amana history books (1908 and 1933) sold to tourists in colony shops and restaurants. A Cedar Rapids native who moved to Iowa City as a child, she graduated from City High (1889), and taught natural science there (1892-1896) until her marriage to debonair UI professor Benjamin Shambaugh. She hosted many prominent university visitors and dignitaries in her classy home just north of Old Brick, now moved two blocks to serve as center of UI’s International Writing Program. She pursued photography as a lifelong hobby, creating a treasure of historic images.
