Benjamin Shambaugh
1871-1940. Among UI’s fine teachers, professor and head (1900-40) of political science whose “campus course” during the 1930s has never met an equal. Born on a farm near Clinton, he attended high school at Iowa City Academy, earned UI bachelor’s and master’s degrees, then a University of Pennsylvania doctorate. Superintendent of the State Historical Society (1907-40), his sentinel book, “Old Capitol Remembers,” marked the 1939 Iowa City centennial. His tall, thin, impeccably attired frame would be seen moving briskly between work in Schaeffer Hall and his home adjacent to Old Brick. The UI Library auditorium carries his name.
