1858-1940. St. Mary’s longest serving priest (1891-1940), a Fort Madison native who provided foundations for the current Regina Catholic Education Center, as well as for the current Newman Catholic Student Center at Clinton and Jefferson streets. He also was instrumental in construction of the matching brick rectory adjoining St. Mary’s. First came an elementary, then in 1897 came St. Mary’s High on the current Newman Center site, the first high school to gain automatic acceptance of graduates into UI.
