Bill Sackter
1913-1983. His inspirational life story became a 1981 movie for which Mickey Rooney won an Emmy in the starring role, lost his father at age 7, was tested “subnormal” at his St. Paul (Minn.) school, and institutionalized at a Minnesota home for the feeble minded, where he remained for 44 years. Barry Morrow, now a Hollywood writer and filmmaker, eventually accepted guardianship, brought Bill to Iowa City in 1974, where School of Social Work director Tom Walz created work for Bill tending Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop in the school’s North Hall quarters, the former University High School building.
