Hunter Rouse

1906-1996. Professor, researcher in fluid turbulence, dean of the College of Engineering (1966-72), built UI’s Institute of Hydraulic Research, which he directed for more than two decades (1944-66), into an internationally recognized innovative and teaching laboratory. One of the first five Carver professors established at UI in 1971, he began his career at MIT (1929-33), followed by work at Columbia (1933-36) and the California Institute of Technology (1936-39) before joining UI’s faculty during 1939. He was active with the American Society of Civil Engineers. His son, Richard, is a foremost expert on the Middle Ages in Western Europe.
