Dorothy Pownall
1895-1979. “Pioneer” female reporter and Press-Citizen women’s editor (1947-55), wrote for St. Paul (Minn.), Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City newspapers. While raising two daughters, she wrote “Mary Manners” columns (1929-39) for the Cedar Rapids Gazette, having settled in Iowa City permanently in 1927 when her husband became university publications director. They had met and were married while both worked at the Des Moines Capital newspaper. As a freelance writer after 1955, she authored numerous articles, which appeared in widely varied publications, including the New York Tribune, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping and Saturday Evening Post.
