Chester Phillips

1882-1976. Nationally recognized money and banking scholar, became first dean (1921- 50) of UI’s business college when it emerged from liberal arts under the name College of Commerce. He helped establish the foundation that grew the college from cramped quarters in Jessup Hall into six-story Phillips Hall named in his honor, and from there on into its modern square-block-sized facility built in 1993 on the north edge of Pentacrest. He is described by former students as father figure, personal counselor and outstanding teacher. As acting UI president during 1940, between Jessup and Hancher, he proved both firm and insightful.
