Bucky O'Connor
1914-1959. “Fabulous Five” era (1953-56) Iowa basketball coach, considered “a gentlemen, one of the truly good guys” died in a car wreck near Waterloo, after which wife, Jane, and daughter, Kathy, remained in Iowa City. In seven seasons, one during 1950, then six more (1952-1958), he went 108-54, including consecutive Big Ten titles, Iowa’s first 20-win season, losing the 1956 Final Four title game to San Francisco and Bill Russell. His “Fab Five” of Sharm Scheuerman, Bill Seaberg, Carl Cain, Bill Schoof and scoring leader Bill Logan, is considered the most successful basketball team in Hawkeye annals.
