Frank Luther Mott

1886-1964. Pulitzer Prize winning author, American literature and writing professor (1921-27), School of Journalism director (1928-42), whose UI short-story class and journalism school produced national reputations for students such as Marquis Childs and George Gallup. After settling a dispute with Ames whereby ISU took technical journalism while Iowa kept writing classes, Iowa’s journalism classes became so popular he instituted qualifications to limit journalism majors and Daily Iowan staff members, creating a foundation for the modern reputation of writing at UI. He left Iowa City during 1942 for Missouri, growing its journalism school to national stature as well.
