Richard "Dick" Lee

1927-2004. Old-school street cop (1950-82), would rather solve problems than make arrests, represents local law enforcement officers who help maintain order in a professional manner. With a chomped-on cigar that he never lit as his trademark, this Iowa City native reportedly often sent offending teens home to tell their own parents, telephoning later to ask them if they had done so. Late Iowa City Mayor Tim Brandt once said: “He was one of the most compassionate son-of-a-guns you would ever want to see.” The Iowa City Police Department now gives an annual professionalism award in his name.
