Ed Koser
1869-1935. Longest-serving Coralville mayor (1903-35), senior of the trio of local Koser mayors, including Preston Koser as Iowa City mayor (1947-51, brother to Ed) and Lee Koser as University Heights mayor (1935-44, unrelated), as well as George Koser who with brother, Lee, founded University Heights (1926). “Mr. Coralville” opened a grocery in 1914 at First Avenue and Fifth Street, which carried Highway 6 until relocated to its current alignment. Two of Koser’s actions widely publicized: His holiday and street dance celebrating highway paving (1921), and his order to burn the ramshackle city jail (1933). “No crime,” he said.
