John Hughes

1939-1985. Hills Bank president (1975-85), perpetually upbeat, seemed to relish chit-chat with customers, shrewdly arranged annexation into Hills of a narrow railroad right-of-way to Iowa City, thus permitting a branch bank in a contiguous town. He opened that Iowa City branch in 1982, then acquired uniBank in Coralville, and built a branch in North Liberty, completing his coup de grace in local banking. Native of a farm just northeast of Hills, he earned both ISU undergraduate and UI law degrees, then practiced law briefly in Cedar Rapids before accepting predecessor Albert Droll’s 1969 offer to become a banker.
