Myrtle “Mother” Hubbard
1899-1971. Leader and organizer, Press-Citizen columnist for two decades, played key organizing role in development of Oaknoll Retirement Residence, becoming its first resident in 1966, and member of its original board. Educated as a school teacher at Simpson College, she came to Iowa City about 1920 with husband, Eugene, where he attended dental school, and then taught there before entering private practice. Her capable and determined attitude, and constant smile, coupled with her “At Home With Mother Hubbard” columns during the 1940s and 1950s, led to numerous volunteer ventures through Women’s Club, Methodist Church and service projects.
