Will Hayek

1896-1982. Erect horse-mounted parade marshal, councilman (1923-26) city attorney (1927-32), leader in civic affairs for a half century. Raised in Iowa City’s “bloody Third Ward,” now called Goosetown, he saw Army duty during both world wars, and in the Iowa National Guard, retiring as a brigadier general in 1960. He store clerked to pay his UI law school expenses, establishing legal practice downtown in 1926. He and his accomplished artist wife, Marjorie, raised two sons who carry on the practice, including grandson, Matt, current Iowa City mayor. The local military affairs association’s lifetime achievement award bears his name.
