Al Grady

1927-2003. Press-Citizen sports editor and columnist from 1951 through 1987, whose ability to quote obscure sports trivia was legendary. The Kalona native’s Hawkeye football and basketball columns were widely quoted, with excerpts reprinted in other Big Ten university towns. During semi-retirement, he wrote “the fourth quarter” as a 25-year history of Hawkeye football, picking up with 1964 where an earlier 75-year history left off. Hawkeye Coach Hayden Fry said of him: “One of the all-time great sportswriters. He was extremely accurate ... and had a knack of putting into words what he witnessed on the field.”
