Buford Garner
1916-2008. City High principal (1950-52) and local schools superintendent (1952-69), shepherded construction of eight local schools including West High (1967-69), and planning for three more including Northwest Junior High (1970-72), as well as renovations and additions to others. The Missouri native who earned an M.A. at Kansas, he left Iowa City for Department of Public Instruction work in Des Moines, where he was instrumental in developing the area education agency concept. He retired from the Ft. Madison area education agency in 1981. A local district elementary school carrying his name will open this fall in North Liberty.
