Forest Evashevski
1918-2009. Hawkeye football coach with a larger-than-life persona, built Iowa into a national football power during the 1950s, only to destroy it as athletic director during the 1960s. A standout Michigan quarterback, Evy first came to Iowa City for Naval Pre-Flight training during World War II. Later during nine seasons (1952-1960) with nine-game schedules, his teams recorded 52 wins, claimed three Big Ten titles, two lop-sided Rose Bowl victories and five “Top 10” rankings. Six players earned All-American and 22 All-Big Ten honors. Heated public quarrels with Paul Brechler eventually caused Brechler to leave, and Evy moved to AD.
