William Englert
1874-1920. Builder of both Englert and Garden (later Varsity, then Astro) theaters, representing the Englerts, whose patriarch Lewis opened City Brewery at 315 Market St., first of three local brewers. Lewis’ son, John, developed a successful ice and wood business, cutting river ice along City Park for storage in layers of sawdust for summer ice boxes. Grandson William and wife Etta Chopek ran both Bon Ton Cafe at 24-26 S. Dubuque St. and the ice business until 1912, when they opened the legitimate theater and movie house bearing their name, moved in upstairs, then built Garden Theatre across Washington Street.
