John Eckstein

Age: 86. Dean of University of Iowa College of Medicine (1970-91), internal medicine faculty (began 1953), oversaw transformation of medical education, bringing physicians and research scientists together. As his tenure ended, the college received $79 million in research grants during 1990. Son of a Central City physician, he was educated at Loras, UI (1950 MD), Letterman Army (San Francisco), and Boston University (cardiovascular fellowship). His leadership helped create the Family Practice specialty and emphasized rural placement of physicians. Called a man of integrity, candor and commitment, the central medical school facility he helped plan and saw built (1989) now carries his name.
