Harold Donnelly
1913-1988. Classic Iowa City bartender, represents the old style working-man’s recreation hall featuring burgers, pool tables, “friendly” card games and cold beers (Dem-o-Crats in his lexicon), provided in his bar the site of high-brow literary and often-times heated political discussions. A high-gloss oak and mahogany Brunswick Arch Bar, originally in Oxford and now in Micky’s in downtown Iowa City, was Donnelly’s hallmark from 1934 to 1974. He tended 41 legendary St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at his bar, now part of the Plaza Center One site south of Jefferson Building. He served as Johnson County supervisor from 1976 until his death.
